City given FA Trophy exemption boost (23/6/00)
A slight change in the structure of next season's FA Trophy will see City enter the competition at the 2nd Round stage. With Conference clubs now exempt until the 3rd Round, the 2nd to 5th place finishers in the Dr Martens, Unibond and Ryman Leagues all enter in the 2nd Round. This match will take place on Saturday 2 December.
No news on any transfers yet, though!
City will field a reserve side next season after their application for a place in the Screwfix Direct Western League was accepted at the league's annual meeting. They join four other new teams given places in Division One of the competition, including Team Bath, who are based at Bath University and will probably feature ex-City players Peter Tisdale and Fidell Richards. The Screwfix League season begins on 12 August, and City Reserves also face a trip to Exmouth Town in the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup on 4 November, with winners facing Larkhall Athletic in the 1st Round. The full 1st Division line-up is as follows:
The first team also know their opponents in the 1st Round of the Dr Martens Cup, Witney Town the visitors to Twerton Park in the competition won last season by Burton Albion.
With Paul Bodin currently on holiday there has been no moves to begin bringing new players into Twerton Park, although Stuart James has joined Dr Martens rivals Newport County, and Jimmy Cox has returned to relegated Gloucester City. One new face (at least, in an offical sense) at Twerton will be Quentin Edwards, who has been named as Jason Turner's replacement as club secretary.
